The man accused of shooting a dog and leaving him for dead in a Cleveland Heights park will remain in jail until his charges in federal court are settled.

Ramone “Raymone” Clements, 42, of Cleveland, was charged with having ammunition as a felon and faces 10 years in jail after police say he chained a dog to a tree in Forest Hill Park, shot him in the jaw and shoulder, and left him for dead last November.

Because he is a convicted felon, he is prohibited by federal law from having ammunition. Police say they found one round of .357-caliber ammunition and two rounds of .22-caliber ammunition in his home while they were investigating the dog shooting.

Though he was originally charged in local courts for animal cruelty and weapons charges, those charges were dropped earlier this month in lieu of his federal prosecution.

Friday Clements appeared in U.S. Federal Court to waive his right to a detention hearing, when a judge would have ruled on his bond.

The dog’s new owner Robin Stone attended the hearing with a handful of supporters, and said she is happy with the results.

“At least we know where he is and at least he’s paying a little bit now,” she said.
