Beaumont volleyball team captures Mayfield Invitational

The volleyball team’s week got off to an inauspicious start as it lost two of three matches, but the Blue Streaks knocked off Eastlake North, Barberton and finally Bay to capture the Mayfield Invitational on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks didn’t drop a set against Eastlake North (25-13, 25-13), Barberton (25-14, 25-10) or Bay (25-23, 25-15) to win the event. Beaumont head volleyball coach Patrick Royer said senior outside hitter Midori Harrison was particularly effective.

“It was a good way to finish up,” Royer said. “Before they seed everybody for the sectional tournament, we still have three more matches, which helps.”

Earlier this week, defending Division II state champion Lake Catholic got revenge for an earlier loss to the Blue Streaks with a 3-2 win on the road and set scores of 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 27-25, 15-8 on Thursday.

“We had kind of a tough one against Lake Catholic. They’re a nice team. We made nine unforced errors in the fifth set which you can’t do. We scored more of their points than they did,” Royer said.

Also, the Blue Streaks defeated Notre Dame Cathedral Latin on the road, 3-1, with scores of 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23 on Tuesday. But Beaumont fell to Kenston, 3-2, with scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12 on Monday.

Beaumont is 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the North Coast League.

The Blue Streaks host Rocky River on Monday (7:30 p.m.) and Walsh Jesuit on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) and travel to Archbishop Hoban on Thursday (6 p.m.)

Girls’ soccer

The Blue Streaks tied Padua, 0-0, in the only game the team played last week. Bad weather canceled Beaumont’s match against Archbishop Hoban on Saturday, and a makeup date has not been set yet.

Against Padua, goalkeeper Megan Nemecek was credited with five saves.

“The team is still young and learning, but we are stronger now than we were at the beginning of the season. Hopefully, we will keep improving,” Beaumont coach Scott Dennis said.

The Blue Streaks visit Aurora on Monday (7 p.m.) and Walsh Jesuit on Wednesday (8 p.m.)

Girls’ tennis

Caitlin Lawless reached the semifinals of the Division II sectionals at Tri-City Park in Rocky River on Saturday and will qualify for district play.

Earlier this week, Beaumont lost, 3-2, at home Wednesday against Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Lawless was switched to No.1 doubles and combined with Eva Szabados for a win.

The Blue Streaks defeated Avon Lake, 3-2, at home on Tuesday as the team won each of its three singles matches. Lawless, Celina Barone and Olivia Ozanne were Beaumont’s winners.

The Blue Streaks travel and face Western Reserve Academy on Monday (4 p.m.)

Girls’ golf

Beaumont was off last week and will compete in the sectional tournament at Gleneagles on Tuesday.

Cross country

The Blue Streaks are ranked 26th with four points in the Division II Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches poll.

Beaumont will run in the Legends Meet at Trumbull County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

Football

Although it was another humbling loss for the Falcons, head coach Donald Dawson believes the team’s performance against Southington Chalker on Saturday night was its best so far.

“We lost (42-12), but this is the hardest my team played all season,” Dawson said of the game held at Windham High School. “I have no complaints about anything. They played their hearts out.”

Brandon Rivers had a rushing touchdown, an interception and an impressive 40-yard catch. Don Rashad had a 66-yard TD reception on a halfback pass from Duray Hall.

Dawson said Austin Woodall, Thomas Jackson, Darien Hambrick, Chawnte Johnson and Rivers all had solid defensive games for the Falcons (0-6).

The Falcons’ homecoming game against Vienne Matthews will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Girls’ tennis

Cleveland Heights took second in the Lake Erie League tournament with 14 points on Wednesday as two singles players and both doubles teams made the final round at Shaker Heights.

No. 1 Lea Katt and No.3 Celia Van Den Bogert both made the finals and joined the No. 1 doubles team of Ling Qy and Abigail Osgood and the No. 2 team of Sophie Madorsky and Lily Gould. Shaker Heights defeated them in each of the finals.

Shaker Heights finished first with 25 points, while Lorain took third (11) and Euclid earned fourth (5).

“I was really happy with it. I was thinking my No. 2 doubles was going to finish first, but they lost in a third-set tiebreak,” Heights tennis coach Kalee Muller said. “Other than that, I was pretty happy with it.”

In the sectional tournament on Friday, Katt, Van Den Bogert and the two doubles teams won their first round matches but didn’t advance in the next round. No Heights player qualified for district play, effectively ending the team’s playoff season.

Muller called Van Den Bogert her most consistent player this season with a 9-3 match record.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers lost, 4-1, to Magnificat as Van Den Bogert got the team’s sole win on Tuesday. Both Shaker Heights matches on Monday were canceled due to bad weather and won’t be made up.

The Tigers host Andrews School at on Monday (4 p.m.) to close their season.

Boys’ golf

Although the Tigers’ tri-match against Lorain and Euclid was rained out on Monday, Jameel Jackson picked up a nice honor as he was named to the second team of the Lake Erie League.

Jackson averaged 42.9 shots in nine-hole competitions and 80 in 18-hole engagements.

“He did a fantastic job this season,” Heights golf coach Kevin Dixon said.

Cleveland Heights will play in the sectionals at Quail Hollow on Monday. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. against 17 teams. The teams will play on the Devlin Course.

Boys’ soccer

The Tigers got back on track and defeated host Wellington, 3-1, on Monday after losing all three of their games last week.

But Cleveland Heights fell to visiting Brush, 1-0, on Saturday to dip to 5-5-1 on the season.

The Tigers are at home all next week as they host Midpark on Monday (7 p.m.), Warren G. Harding on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and Willoughby South on Thursday (7 p.m.)

Field hockey

The Tigers were washed out for another week as rain claimed their match against Orange on Tuesday. The match will be played Thursday (4:30 p.m.) at Orange.

Also this week, the Tigers travel to Laurel School on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.) and host Magnificat on Friday (4:30 p.m.)

Cross country

Cleveland Heights will run in the Legends Meet at Trumbull County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
