The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections called for an automatic recount of the Cleveland Heights City Council race and four other elections at its meeting Tuesday.

The final results are in, and the numbers are still close. The Cleveland Heights recount is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 5. 

Three four-year seats were up for grabs on Cleveland Heights City Council this election year. Incumbent Dennis Wilcox was the clear winner, snagging 7,140 votes, according to final results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

But the second and third place winners, incumbent Phyllis Evans and challenger Mary Dunbar, now have 47 votes separating them, according to the final results, receiving 6,494 and 6,447 respectively. And Jeff Coryell is just 64 votes behind Dunbar at 6,383.

But Coryell said now that the final results have put him farther behind, he doesn't think the recount will make much of a difference.

"I congratulate Mary Dunbar ... and I wish her well, and I’m sure she’ll be a fine member of council," he said after he found out the results of the race at the Board of Elections meeting. "As for me, I plan to be very involved in the community, and look for other ways to help Cleveland Heights have a bright future. As far as running again, I’m open to the idea, but it depends on the circumstances so we’ll have to wait and see."

Ohio law dictates an automatic recount in municipal elections if the difference between votes cast for the declared winning candidate and the declared losing candidate is equal to or less than .5 percent of the total votes cast on the race or issue.

Other elections that will be recounted Dec. 5 are the University Heights City Council, Bedford City School District's Issue 4, Mayfield Heights City Council, Council Unexpired Term Ending Dec. 31, 2013 and the City of Bedford Heights Charter Review Commission.
