The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District hopes to raise $750,000 to renovate Hosboro Field at Crawford Stadium.
Plans include replacing the stadium's natural grass with synthetic turf, which the district estimates will save $20,000 to $25,000 per year on maintenance costs.
The district also hopes to renovate the stadium's ticket booths, stands and restrooms.
The district hopes to get $200,000 from the National Football League and to raise the rest through its alumni and boosters.

What a terrible idea: real science (not the kind you get from industry lobbyists) suggests that such fields are far more dangerous to athletes than traditional grass fields. Since all artificial turf manufacturers require that they be treated periodically with pesticides, they are also illegal under current city ordinance 1785.02. Projected cost savings ignore the basic math: we will spend nearly $10,000 per game played. Please join me in opposing this unsustainable idea.

If that is true, why do CHHS Lacrosse and Soccer play on the new TURF field at Dennison park? For that matter, if it is illegal, why did the city build it in the first place?

I just spoke to a concerned citizen who has been delving deep into this issue in our city and the Denison field is not being cleaned with the pesticidal chemicals. So, it's good our kids our not mucking around in the chemicals, but then the ARE mucking around in a higher count of mold and bacteria... Why DID the city get the wool pulled over their eyes by these turf-selling companies? It is a toxic mess from start to finish

they, (chuh school district) will want to pass a tax for the tax payers to pay for the field. It is unfair that the people who do not attend or have kids that go to that Prison anymore should have to pay for it, along with other things, IE: pavilion and pool. If you don't have kids attending any school in upper east cleveland heights, why do we have to pay for the schools and other peoples kids to play!!!!

First off, it's irresponsible to refer to the school as a "prison."
Second, the taxpayers won't be paying a dime for this renovation.
Finally, the idea behind PUBLIC education is that it's publicly-funded. I pay for a lot of things that I'm sure that you use that I will never use. Such is life.

Correction for your reporter. It's Hosford Field, not Hosboro Field. I was there when the field was dedicated on a rainy night in October, 1948 to Harry Hosford in honor of his substantial donation.

This is still a rather one-sided article, not touching on all of the concerns which have been written about lately regarding artificial turf. I hope that the school board and administrators will practice due diligence to protect our children and the environment. I have heard that they have not yet done all the fact-finding to compare the true costs of an improved GRASS field (more durable than the current grass) managed with organic care. How about making a phone call to get the facts, then try an organic approach for a year or two to see how good this field can become before sinking money into artificial turf made of toxic compounds which may or may not be allowed to be cleaned with more toxic compounds. And after seven to 10 years it must be replaced anyway and all of this toxic stuff will sit in a landfill forever, aside from those particles which break off and find their way into the water table. Yum. And every seven to 10 years more money will be need to be raised to buy new turf and have the old turf sent away (quite a hefty cost just to dispose of it!) to further poison our environment. I know sports get everyone excited and it is all too easy to believe the great things the turf salesman will say about their product. But please keep an open mind and think hard about whether to trust the salesmen and this industry who until 2010 used LEAD paint and only removed it from the process because of a law suit. Don't trust this industry. Use your own brain please.

Why renovate anything. They should use the money to hire more people to conduct residency checks. There are more and more kids that live in east cleveland and cleveland that we the taxpayers foot the bill for. Until this is taken care of i would urge all property owners to vote down any levy that is placed on the ballot.

Lots of issues here!
1. (Sam) Artificial turf- Lets pass a levy to get rid of the artificial turf at the new soccer field and to put Dennison Pool back in. It was healthier. The artifical turf is a mess to get out of kids shoes, socks, and clothes. The chlorine, except for the smell, showers off. (My son played soccer AND swam at CHHS.) I do not believe that turf is healthy!!
2. (Mike) I will not vote to pay for another artificial turf field b/c I think they are poisonous! CHHS is NOT A PRISON! They have some serious issues, but a student can get a good education. I do not agree with all of their decisions, and some of the honors classes are "watered down" so that they can be "open" to students who should not be taking them. But, there are some very nice things going on there. Go see a play or a music production. They are incredible! Most of the participants are in honors/AP classes, and participate in sports. They have many opportunities at that school.
3. (UH resident) Public education- yes- we pay for some things that others use. Our community does need to demand stronger academics at CHHS. I would vote to raise taxes for more to entice more academically-inclined students to attend the Hts schools. There are some, but it would be nice to get more.
4. (Ken) Residency checks- I vote for more enforcement of this, too. We should be paying for our residents, not other cities' residents, to go to our schools. Check some of the duplexes.

Just wait until shaker replaces their new turf field and we will take their hand me downs . Plus their field is made with all natural, all organic polypropylene fibers that when injested provide good fiber.
