Double Yum: Two New Frozen Yogurt Shops to Grace Coventry

Kiwispoon and Piccadilly have begun setting up shop on opposite ends of Coventry Road

As the weather warms, Cleveland Heights residents should have two new options for cool treats on Coventry Road.

Kiwispoon, an Connecticut chain opening its first out-of-state shop, and Piccadilly, a new business run by local two brothers, have hung signs and brown paper over the windows of two shops in the Coventry business district.

Kiwispoon is located on the corner of Coventry and Euclid Heights, in the same building as Burgers-n-Beers, above Phoenix Coffee and B-Side Lounge. The business was founded in Wallington, Conn. in 2011 and today has three locations in Connecticut.

Piccadilly Artisan Yogurt is a locally owned organic frozen yogurt shop that will open next to Pacific East near the corner of Mayfield Road and Coventry.

We're meeting with both shops soon and will share more when we have it!

I wonder how the two owners feel about this.

I wonder why we again have two competitors, one local and one a chain, in a relatively small neighborhood. Business owners have the right to rent/buy a building and set up shop. But I would hope there was some way around a situation that can promote failure for one or both businesses.

One caveat... We shouldn't pre-judge. Maybe both business owners went ahead, fully informed of what the other guy was doing.

Now, with the fine print out of the way...

Exactly! Where were all the "business friendly" city council people and economic development department people?

In my opinion this condition already exists on Coventry with sub shops:
Dave's Cosmic vs. Jimmy John's vs. Grum's

I would love to see an ice cream/yogurt shop succeed on Coventry - but in my 10 years as a Cleveland Heights resident none have been able to stay more than a year or two.

I find this situation odd due to the simultaneous openings.

As much as I love to see that businesses are going in and hiring and contributing to the local economy.... I ask this question... why is it always food? Is it easier to set something like that up? I remember being able to walk through coventry or the cedar lee area and there were not only restaurants but multiple shops selling a wide variety of items. Now it seems as though these places are no longer a destination to spend the day, shop and eat but just a means to fight to find a parking place go and eat and maybe hit a shop if it is open past 7pm.

We like to think we are still the city in its heyday but we aren't. We have become the parents who get tired early and get upset because the kids are playing their music too loud, when at one point we were those kids. I say do not discourage new business but look for diversity within the new businesses coming in. Give options for the younger generation wanting to be out later and willing to spend money at more than just a bar.

If we could do that, then more people would want to visit and dare I say maybe move here, have families and contribute to the tax base and be a part of the school district.

It is a win win for everyone - just remember while food is good it is not always the answer.

There are some cool little boutique shops on Coventry worth checking out. But in reality, retail is dying a slow death as much of it can be replaced with online shopping. They haven't figured out a way yet to replicate dining on the internet, so I'm guessing that's why these types of establishments seem to dominate bricks-and-mortars shopping centers.
