Heights High Student Reads Winning Maltz Essay To School Board

Corinne Sinclair won first place in the 10th grade division of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out essay contest. She read her essay about bullying to the CH-UH School Board.

Cleveland Heights High School student Corinne Sinclair says her little brother is too young to be on Facebook. And she has a good reason to be protective.

Her brother was cyber-bullied when he was 12. Someone hacked into his page and wrote comments about his sexuality as if they were coming from him. Kids responded to the fake post with a list of insults.

Corinne read about his experience, and what she did to try to combat bullying, to the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board Aug. 7. Tears started streaming down her face as she recounted the painful experience her brother went through.

Her teacher Donna Feldman gave her encouraging pats on the back and a big hug before and after she read her piece.

The Heights High student, who will be a junior this fall, won the 10th grade division of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out essay contest in April. She and two other students from Heights High swept the sophomore category.

Read more about Corinne's essay and the other two students, Adrian Berr and Maryam Assar, who landed in second and third place.
