Kaiser Permanente Opens Farm Stand

The Cleveland Heights location in Severance Circle and other Northeast Ohio medical facilities now offer fresh fruit and vegetables.

Kaiser Permanente has launched a weekly Farm Stand at three of its Northeast Ohio facilities, including the Cleveland Heights location.

The Cleveland Heights Medical Center in Severance Circle will offer a stand with fresh fruits and vegetables from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Oct. 29.

Kelly Smith, a member of the Kaiser Green Team, said that is one of the busiest times at the facility.

This is the first year Kaiser is offering stands in Northeast Ohio, though its California locations have had them for years, she said. Vendor Danny McNabb set up shop in the medical center's parking lot in July.

Soon the Farm Stand will have recipe cards that correspond with the offerings that week. And some weeks the stand will demonstrate how to make foods healthier. For example, one week someone came in and showed people how to make salsa using fresh vegetables.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, McNabb offers honey, jam and sometimes eggs.

McNabb said he takes suggestions from people browsing and buying.

The stand is part of Kaiser's green initiative, Smith said, and is also available on rotating Wednesdays at the Brooklyn Heights and Willoughby locations.

"The goal is to improve the health of members and the community we serve," she said. "The whole mission of Kaiser is to help the community where we serve thrive."

Prices: 75 cents for a cucumber, $3 for a box of tomatoes, strawberries, etc. $1.50 for cantaloupe. Most items are no more than $3.
