Know Alzheimer's Signs Before Holiday Gatherings

Keep an eye on parents and other loved ones while you're together over the holidays.

Another holiday season has arrived.

That means you are another year older. And so are your parents, your grandparents and other older relatives.

Whether you see your family often or just a few times a year, you may be noticing that they aren't quite how they used to be in some ways.

It's not a pleasant holiday subject, but with all the gatherings going on over the coming weeks, it's a good time to observe your parents or other relatives for signs of Alzheimer's Disease.

The Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter offers a list of ten warning signs of Alzheimer's. With the list, they also give examples of what is just normal aging.

Some of the warning signs include decreased or poor judgment, personality and mood changes, never-seen problems with speaking and writing, and having trouble doing familiar things like cooking recipes they regularly make or paying bills on time.

Check the attached PDF for the list and more information.

If you have questions or concerns, or aren't sure how to handle the next steps, call the Alzheimer's Association's 24/7 hotline at 1-800-272-3900.

The Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter has offices in Mentor and Avon.

My mother in law and my grandfather are both suffering from Alzheimer's right now. My mother in law has early onset and has been struggling since she was in her 50s. Another thing to look out for is if they keep repeating themselves, i.e., if they JUST told you something 3 minutes ago and then say the exact same thing again, as though they never said it the first time. Alzheimer's is the most evil disease I've ever experienced...it robs it's victims of so much...

Remember to enjoy your loved ones on these coming holidays and always. If you see signs of this horrible disease, make sure you act accordingly-get in touch with your local chapter of the alzheimers association for advice on how to proceed and make sure your loved one goes to see their general physician to have a full medical evaluation done.alzheimers takes so much away from families-don't let it stop you from enjoying the holidays with someone you love even if they do have the disease.I enjoy every holiday I'm blessed enough to spend with my mom and our family-she has severe alzheimers.thanks Carla Danesi Glorias daughter "Remember Gloria,Gloria Lives"
