The April 22 “Once Again: Cleveland Heights Throwback Artist Showcase” at Euclid Tavern has spawned follow-up showcases to be held closer to home at Grog Shop on consecutive Fridays, July 8 and 15.

That first show “was magical from so many levels,” said Mai Moore, a 1995 Heights High graduate and producer of the showcases.

Several artists, who mostly attended Cleveland Heights High School in the 1990s, created the magic the first time around, while showing off their talents and the diversity of their musical styles to alumni, teachers, the community, the media and music industry professionals.

One of those artists was Harry Bacharach, better known around Cleveland Heights as Ari Friedman, class of ’94, who was thrilled at the great response to the first show.

It was “fun seeing people I haven't seen in 20 years, too,” Bacharach/Friedman said.

He’ll do his part to bring back the energy from the first event to the July 15 show by playing his own brand of jazz.

“It's heavy, easy listening,” he said. “The content is heavy. The delivery is mellow.”

Local artists representing hip-hop, R&B and other musical genres will play an average of three numbers during the showcases.

Performing July 8 are Stacia Rhodes, a 1996 grad, who describes her sound as soul/reggae, and Chop Chop, an electropop band fronted by Catherine Cavanagh, class of '94, whose latest recording is a rock 'n' roll space opera.

Two of the youngest performers — Antoine Dunn, class of 2006, and Kellen Walker, Class of 2005 — have embraced an older-yet-contemporary form of music, referred to as retro- or R&B-soul.

Representing hip-hop are Jay Floyd; Damion Towns, whose stage name is Peazie Dibiosi; Golden Barker, who performs as G Clip; and cousins Roderick Gibbs and Curtis Britton, who are known as The Brovament.

The DJ for the evening is Curt B, a.k.a. Curtis Britton. Big Fatz, a.k.a. Derek Johnson, will handle DJ duties for the July 15th show.

Anthony Jones, Heights class of ’93, is scheduled to reprise his role as host for both showcases.

Seven of the acts from the Euclid Tavern show will be back for the July 15 showcase, including Harry Bacharach, Gwen Maul (soul and R&B) and Rum Rozier (a.k.a. Jeff Rozier, House music).

Also returning are alternative artists The INR CRCL (LaToya Kent and Christopher Horne) and alternative/hip-hop duo Kounterclockwise.

Grown Blak Mouse Piece (Eric Berry) and King Hue (Mark Foust) claim hip-hop as their genre of music, as does Wildlife Soundz, featuring a 1992 Heights grad who is called Jungl Droop Jumonji.

Obie Won (Joe Grind/Hasan Adams) is harder to pigeonhole, listing hip-hop, dancehall, roots and reggae as his musical genres.

What can Grog Shop audiences expect at the upcoming showcases?

“More talented people than one city can handle,” says Bacharach/Friedman.

Once Again: Cleveland Heights Throwback Artist Showcases will be held Friday, July 8, and Friday, July 15, at Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Heights Blvd. Showtime both nights: 8 p.m. Cost for each showcase: $10 in advance, $15 day of show.
