Updated: South Taylor Road Construction Starts Aug. 2
The project will take two to three years
Updated 6 a.m. June 25
Construction on South Taylor Road, originally scheduled to start this month, will begin Aug. 2.
Cleveland Heights City Council read a resolution that described the financing and the scope of work for the project at its meeting June 20.
Mayor Ed Kelley said though some estimate that the work will take two years, he guesses it will be closer to three.
But it's worth the wait.
"I want it done right the first time," Kelley said, who has called the road the worst in Cuyahoga County.

Repairs on South Taylor Road, originally scheduled to start in June, have been delayed until August, said Cleveland Heights City Manager Robert Downey.
"The bid opening date is July 21, according to the state department of transportation," Downey said. "The award date is one week later, July 28. The beginning of construction will be some time in August and the end of construction is tentatively September 2012."
The $5 million project was pushed back because city officials weren't sure if state money to fix the road would be included in Gov. John Kasich's new budget, Downey said. The project is also being paid for with federal and county money.
"The job is controlled by the state," Downey said. "We did have a June bid date, but with the budget business going on in Columbus, the transportation bill was delayed a little bit before the governor got to sign it."
He added, "When you have a project like this that's going over the course of two seasons, one month isn't the biggest thing in the world."
Already, several utility companies have been doing work on South Taylor before the road repairs begin.
Crews will rip up the concrete portion of the road, create a new base and pave it with asphalt. The project will start at Euclid Heights Boulevard and run north on Taylor to the East Cleveland border, which is roughly a mile and a half.
Crews will also upgrade the drainage system, remove signals and change the pavement markings, in addition to other work.

Thank you for the update Megan. Will the tree lawns be part of this project?I'm asking because my tree lawn is not grass covered,I use plants and stones I don't want to do a project that have to be removed for the construction.Again thank you for the update!

Does this construction include the narrowing of the Taylor Rd. from 5 lanes to 4?
The plan is to add greenspace to the Severance side of Taylor. That would be a big mistake. The greenspace belongs on the west side of Taylor where the people live!
But, maybe this construction does not apply to the plan to narrow Taylor by one lane... Can you clarify that for me?
Thanks!

Fran: I am unsure whether that is part of the plan. When I spoke with Downey and I asked him the details of the project, it didn't include widening Taylor. However, I will check again. Thanks!
Linda: Your question is similar to Fran's, and I will check on that as well.
Thank you both for reading!
