The Cleveland Clinic announced it was closing Huron Hospital in East Cleveland on Monday, citing financial reasons and the declining population in the area.

East Cleveland lost almost 35 percent of its residents during the past 10 years, according to the 2010 Census.

In response to Clinic’s decision, two grassroots organizations, Fight for a Fair Economy and Black on Black Crime, organized a march that ended in a rally in front of Cleveland Clinic.

The march started with about 30 people, but then later more than doubled at the rally that included city council members from Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. Residents of East Cleveland, Cleveland Heights and family of Huron Hospital employees were there to oppose the Clinic’s decision.

Joseph Milicia, spokesperson for the Cleveland Clinic, said that the hospital is planning open forums to “engage the community about the transition of the hospital and the new Cleveland Clinic Huron Community Center” soon.

“Our commitment to our patients in East Cleveland has not changed. We’re transitioning the way we care for patients to better meet their healthcare needs,” Milicia said. “We are building a new Cleveland Clinic Huron Community Health Center that will focus on chronic diseases that are prevalent in this patient population. Inpatient care will be moved to Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, 2.5 miles from Huron Hospital, or other hospitals within our system. Transportation will be provided for those patients who need it.”
