Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Young Ladies of Noble 

• Fifth-graders at Noble Elementary School
• Performing original production The Lady about First Lady Michelle Obama and black history 
• Help the community through regular service projects

The 19 members of the Young Ladies of Noble, a merit and honor club dedicated to community service, have worked for six weeks to bring the fictionalized story of Michelle Obama and her ancestors to life.

The girls are scheduled to perform the play, written by Heights playwright and Noble parent David Hansen, on Friday. Hansen wrote the 10-minute play for the young ladies and gave each girl a part. The event is one way the school celebrates Black History Month.

Selena Gillespie, 10, plays the first lady, a Harvard-educated lawyer.

“It’s been cool,” Selena said, adding, “I want to be a lawyer.”

Lizzie Dicus, 11, plays the character of Obama’s great-great-great-grandmother. Lizzie said she learned a lot about black history to help prepare for the role.

“It’s fun,” she said as she waited to take the stage.

All of the young ladies must make the merit or honor roll and receive teacher recommendations to be part of The Young Ladies of Noble. Throughout the year, they perform a variety of service projects under the direction of their teacher Nancy Eisenberg. They have made blankets for children in crisis and art activity bags for children in area hospitals, Eisenberg said.
