Heights Arts Director Peggy Spaeth Wins Cleveland Arts Prize

Spaeth will receive the Martha Joseph Prize, which is given to individuals or organizations who have contributed to the arts in Northeast Ohio

Heights Arts Director Peggy Spaeth has accomplished so much during the last 13 years. She has been executive director of the organization since it was founded in 2000. Heights Arts President Sharon Grossman previously described it as "13 years of fine art, the written word, public art, poet laureates, signs, benches, openings, murals, street concerts, home concerts, fund raisers, fun raisers, collaborations and installations." And, for her hard work, Spaeth will receive a Cleveland Arts Prize this June 27 at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Senior Soloists Take Center Stage At School Sympony Concert

Mary O'Keefe and Kate Miller will perform music by Sir Eugene Goossen and Beethoven, respectivele

Cleveland Heights High School seniors Mary O’Keefe and Kate Miller will be featured soloists at the upcoming concert by the School Symphony on Friday, May 3rd. An ensemble group will perform at 6:30 p.m. and then the full symphony will perform at 7:30 p.m.  Mary, an oboist, will perform Oboe Concerto in One Movement by Sir Eugene Goossen. Kate, a pianist, will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto number 1, First Movement. Both musicians will attend a music conservatory in the fall to study music performance. Eight years ago, Mary attended a Heights High concert and saw a senior soloist playing the oboe. “That was when I knew what I wanted to do,” she said. Cain Park Celebrates 75th Anniversary With Mixture Of Homegrown & National Talent

See everyone from Yes to Weird Al and Michael Stanley to Michael McDonald this summer at Cain Park

Cain Park is celebrating its 75th season with an eclectic lineup that ranges from Yes to Weird Al Yankovic, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings to Amy Grant and Michael Stanley to Michael McDonald, as well as several local talents. To honor its history, the park will open the exhibit “Cain Park. Dreaming Under The Stars For 75 Years” an hour before all events from June 13 through Aug. 18 in the Audrey and Harvey Feinberg Art Gallery. The exhibit includes historical memorabilia from the park's history. The performance season kicks off June 13 with Smokey Joe's Cafe, a musical revue that includes 39 songs from classing songwriting duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Heights High Spring Gospel Choir Concert To Feature J.J. Hairston

The leader of Youthful Praise will join the Heights High Spring Gospel Choir Concert this Friday

The Heights High Gospel Choir will have a special guest during their Spring Concert this Friday -- J.J. Hairston. The leader of Youthful Praise -- as well as Grammy and Soul Train Award nominee -- will perform three numbers with the students. Coincidentally, Hairston got his start conducting high school choirs. The concert will begin 7:30 p.m. this Friday at the Heights High School auditorium. The Heights Gospel Choir is directed by Sandra Dixon and includes 30 students. The choir was started in 1974. New Heights Arts Director Announced

Rachel Bernstein comes to Heights Arts from the Music Settlement

Heights Arts has hired a new director. Rachel Bernstein, who will replace outgoing director Peggy Spaeth July 2, has experience as a performance artist, educator and administrator, Spaeth said. “Which is a nicely rounded experience for someone who will be working in a small grassroots organization,” she added. Spaeth said that Bernstein, who has worked at the Cleveland Music Settlement for 15 years, plays the cello and teaches cello, displays a passion and vision for connecting arts to the community. “This isn’t just a job,” she added. “We’re a nonprofit and we’re very mission-driven.
