Cleveland Heights High School senior Antonio Harper was the big winner at Hathaway Brown School’s iMagine Film Festival on Friday, April 12. Harper’s film, Larry, won first place in the Comedy category and then was named “Best in Show” as the festival’s single most outstanding film. “I was thrilled, excited, and nervous all bundled into one,” Harper said in a statement. He added that his film’s humorous look at a day in the life of a Heights student came from staying true to his own creative instincts. “When (Jeff Glass, the Heights High’s video production instructor,) told me about the competition, I started thinking about complex things. Several Cleveland Heights spots -- from barbers to bars, from toy stores to Tommy's -- were included in Cleveland Scene's annual Best of Cleveland list. The winners were chosen by Scene readers. Cleveland Height houses several favorite restaurants. Melt Bar & Grilled was named favorite sandwich shop and its owner, Matt Fish, was voted best local entrepreneur. Meanwhile, Phoenix was named the Best Coffee Shop and La Cave Du Vin won best wine bar. Coventry institution Tommy's was selected as the best vegetarian/vegan restaurant and voters picked the Mad Greek on Fairmount as having the best Greek cuisine. Cleveland Heights’ next Poet Laureate will put a modern spin on an ancient art with her 2013 project Poetweet. Kathleen Cerveny was tasked with running a blog and writing poetry about Cleveland Heights as the Heights Arts 2013 Poet Laureate and wanted to get Cleveland Heights residents directly involved in this year’s program. She’s lived in the community for several years off and on, but, she said, though she feels she knows her version of Cleveland Heights, she can’t know everybody’s. “I have the experience of the fabulous music of Dave’s,” she said of the local grocery store that plays 50s and 60s soul and pop music, “and I imagine other people experience that, too. Heights Arts has named Kathleen Cerveny as the city of Cleveland Heights' poet laureaute for 2013-2014. She will be joined by outgoing Poet Laureate Cavana Faithwalker and will read a poem or two at the Cleveland Heights City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall. Cerveny has been involved in the local scene as an artist, poet, grantmaker and advocate. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cerveny was a producer of arts programming for public radio station WCPN 90.3 FM. Cerveny joined the Cleveland Foundation in 1991 and, as the Foundation’s Director of Arts Initiatives, shaped the Foundation’s Arts and Culture programs.
