Council approved a loan to help Burgers-N-Beer establish a restaurant on Coventry Road.
A new restaurant will soon move into the space formerly occupied by McNulty's Pub on Coventry Road. City Council approved a $60,000 loan to help Burgers-N-Beer establish a store at 1854 Coventry, and Mayor Ed Kelley said the business could open as early as July or August. Burgers-N-Beer, which also has a restaurant in Willoughby, will bring 11 full-time jobs and 10 part-time jobs. At least 51 percent of the full-time equivalent positions must be dedicated for people with low to moderate incomes, according to council documents. The menu includes sandwiches, salads, sweet potato fries, wings, ribs and of course, burgers. According to its website, the restaurant opened in 1999. The money comes from the city's Commercial Revolving Loan Fund …

Sales soared in 2011, but have been more modest so far this year.
For Northeast Ohio car dealers, 2012 so far hasn’t brought a repeat of the big sales of 2011, when consumers returned to the market after a terrible 2010. But they’re optimistic things will pick up as the year goes along. As a 21-county region, Northeast Ohio car dealers sold 47,855 cars through March — about 1.8 percent more than the same period last year, according to the Greater Cleveland Auto Dealers Association. That’s a more modest gain than in other U.S. markets, where sales jumped by 20 percent over the same period, according to a National Auto Dealers Association report. But area sales managers don't focus on such comparisons. Their confidence in a slowly improving economy and a loosening loan market hasn't wavered. If the GCADA's…

Vero Bistro wants to bring Italian favorites back to the Cedar Fairmount Business District — with a new twist.
A popular pizza and gelato shop that closed last year will soon be replaced by a, well, pizza and gelato shop. The owner, Cleveland Heights resident Marc-Auréle Buholzer, worked for La Gelateria in the Cedar Fairmount Business District off and on for many years. The experience inspired him to create his own store, and he plans to open sometime this month. “The community loved this place,” he said. But he says he'll offer something a little different. The restaurant, Vero, which means true or real in Italian, will stay open year-round, all the time. Buholzer, 28, is redecorating the interior to look more like a café or bistro and adding more tables. He covered the light blue walls with olive and rust tones. He’ll also serve a specific type…

The newest tenant in the former Coventry School invites the public to check out the space.
The former Coventry School has a new tenant. The Open Office is celebrating its grand opening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, and founder Andrew Auten wants residents to come check out the new space. The company provides a coworking environment and professional office space for people who normally work from home or coffee shops. “Hey, I love Phoenix ... but at the same time it’s not always that conducive to producing. We want to provide a work space that’s larger than a café table and has a reliable, secure wi-fi connection,” Auten said in an interview in January. “That’s what we want to offer — a third space that’s not (the coffee shop) and not your home.” The Cleveland Heights Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for The …

The much anticipated DIY brewery will open on Lee Road this week, but customers will have to wait until July to "brew on premise."
After much anticipation, The BottleHouse Brewery will open its doors Tuesday. Owners Brian Benchek and Dave Schubert originally planned to open the DIY brewery last spring, but ran into some road blocks while rehabbing the building. The pair then rescheduled the opening for spring 2012, and they're right on time. The Lee Road establishment will first unveil its tasting room Tuesday, which will feature a variety of craft beers, and roll out the "brew on premise" in July. Customers will soon be able to schedule dates to make their own beer, which will cost $100 to $150, according to the BottleHouse website. The new business will also feature live music. The Afro Cleveland Orchestra will kick off the brewery's opening, and more bands and …

Both Cleveland Heights schools participated in second annual RoboBots competition at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland
For the past six months, Ann Kent has been without a car on Saturday mornings. However, she saw the reason why this weekend at the second annual RoboBots competition in Kirtland, and she was fine with it. "On Saturdays, he's up at 6:10 a.m. — a 17-year-old — and starts picking up his buddies on the way out to Willoughby to Heisler Tool Company," Kent said of her son, Bryan, a junior at Cleveland Heights High School. "He's going into mechanical engineering, he's very certain." Bryan spent that time in Willoughby building and preparing for his CHHS Street Sweepers' robot to face off against 23 other school teams at Lakeland Community College. The team suffered an early exit, leaving Bryan and teammate Gabe Wojnarowski to discuss how much …

Steve Presser said the Thursday music and movie nights will be enhanced, but there won't be a Coventry Street Arts Fair this year.
There will be no Coventry Street Arts Fair in 2012, said Steve Presser, owner of Big Fun and member of the Coventry Special Improvement District. Instead, the Coventry business district will focus on enhancing its music and movie series that it hosts Thursday nights throughout the summer. Presser said the first one will likely be at the end of June, and they will be scheduled throughout July. "We’re looking to potentially widen the scope of what we’re doing. We may do other programming on the street," he said. The Coventry SID planned two Coventry Street Arts Fairs last summer, but the second one was canceled after the first fair, which started off as a great event, ended on a very negative note. Police Chief Jeffrey Robertson said that …

Owner Jim Grenwis, a '93 Heights High grad, pays homage to his alma mater.
Cleveland Heights residents and visitors may have noticed that Kobalt on Lee Road got a new name — The Social Room. Though it may not be known as Kobalt anymore, it's the same bar. Owner Jim Grenwis, a 1993 Cleveland Heights High School grad, recently renamed the bar to pay homage to the place in the school where students still hang out today. His wife, Jennifer Babcox, is also a Heights grad. There is one other new feature — the bar will offer patio seating during the warmer months. Do you like the new name? Tell us in the comments below.

Hi, Jeanne The vast majority of items we publish are specific to the individual Patches. From time to time, however, we do stories that cross boundaries. An example would be coverage of visits to the area by presidential candidates; if a candidate visits one Patch, we're pretty sure what he has to say there would be of interest in other Patches as well. The same thinking led us to look at a …   more ›
