DESCRIPTION:Dick Dale (born Richard Anthony Mansour on May 4\, 1937\, in
Quincy\, Massachusetts) is a pioneer of surf rock and one of the most i
nfluential guitarists of the early 1960s. His technique influenced futu
re guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. He experimented
with reverb and made use of custom made Fender amplifiers.\nHe was bor
n to a Lebanese father and a Polish mother\, and soon learned to play t
he drums\, the ukulele\, and finally the guitar. Among his early musica
l influences was his uncle\, an oud player performing belly dance music
. Much of his early music shows a middle eastern influence. The&nbsp\;M

0s playing with his band The Del-Tones for surfers at the Rendezvous Ba
llroom in Balboa\, California. With authorities concerned about the mix
of young people and guitars\, one of the requirements at the Ballroom
was that every male patron wear a tie\, so the audience was often made u
p of barefooted guys in surfer garb wearing ties that were handed out a
t the door.\nDale is often credited as one of the first electric guitar
ist to employ exotic scales in his playing. When Dale started surfing h
e became so fascinated that he began seeking ways of channeling the ene
rgy and power of the sport through his guitar playing. While he is prim
arily known for introducing the use of guitar reverb\, which has since
become a staple of the surf sound\, it was Dale&rsquo\;s fast staccato
picking that was his trademark. Since Dale was left-handed he was initi
ally forced to play a right-handed model\, much like Jimi Hendrix would
do years later. However\, he did so without restringing the guitar\, l
eading him to effectively play the guitar upside-down (while Hendrix wo
uld restring his guitar). Even after he acquired a proper left-handed g
uitar\, Dale continued to use his reverse stringing.
