90 Years in 90 Days: Appletree Books

90 photos that define Cleveland Heights

Cleveland Heights officially became a city in 1921. Cleveland Heights Patch is by compiling 90 photos to create an album of the city's past and present. We'll run the feature for 90 days, one photo at a time.

For more than 20 years, Jane Kessler has kept the doors open at when other bookstores closed shop.

The Appletree is a fixture in the Cedar Fairmount district. Kessler bought the bookstore in 1990 after retiring as a psychology professor at Case Western Reserve University. The business has watched bigger stores, like Borders and Joseph-Beth, cut back and close. Kessler says the key is customer service, and her willingness to do outside events.
