90 Years in 90 Days: Dean's Dairy

90 photos that define Cleveland Heights

Cleveland Heights officially became a city in 1921. Cleveland Heights Patch is by compiling 90 photos to create an album of the city's past and present. We'll run the feature for 90 days, one photo at a time.

Today's photo, from 1959, promoted the 75th anniversary of Dean's Dairy, which delivered milk and other products for about 90 years.

Dean's Dairy was started Orville A. Dean. In 1886, he built a large farmhouse at 3151 Mayfield Road, where the Homewood Residence at Rockefeller Gardens stands. In 1920, the dairy was moved to 3211 Mayfield Road, where it was located until it closed in the 1970s. - source: clevelandmemory.org, clevelandhistorical.org

Why does the map to the right of this article say "Fairmount" at the intersection of Mayfield and Lee?

What was (is?) the name of the dairy on Warrensville Center Road, just north of Mayfield? I recall it was there for many decades, too.

(Looks like this posting was swallowed by the Internet:)

Believe it or not, there was once a time when Dean Dairy's horse-drawn delivery wagons traveled Cleveland Heights's streets, delivering milk and other dairy products to customers' homes. A CH resident shares her memories of these here:

Eric, this is Afi Scruggs and I'm posting the photos for this series.
I know the dairy you mentioned because I remember when it was closed. Stay posted for an answer on Monday.

Mike, thanks for posting this. If I'd remembered, I would have linked to this video in the story.

That's odd. I was at the previous meeting, my first - on Global Warming, paid dues for the firstRead More time ever, wrote down my e-mail more than once, and still had no idea there was a meeting was last night.

Location is on Ormond Road, between Lee and South Taylor (the Heights main library is on the corner)

I believe ths site could best serve CH residents as a future wind farm (small scale of course). ItRead More sits high above the surrounding area; could accommodate possible 3 turbines; and provide electricity to the surrounding residents and businesses. Of course, the council would run it like they do the water/sewer, streets, forestry, lighting, "insert other here" departments, and it would just turn into a way to charge residents and continue to bleed them dry. But they would give tax abatements to whoever built the turbines or operated them.

Diane, for what it's worth, I believe FutureHeights has announced their intention to have a meetingRead More where the community can discuss ideas for Severance.

Along those lines, Diane, I thought an indoor greenhouse would be a good idea. Classes on how toRead More create gardens, grow food, store and preserve food would be an asset to the City.

Just ignore them then. The important thing is what we're talking about HERE.

Please join the conversation. The proposed school bond would be a timely starting point!
