90 Years in 90 Days: The Family of Eliot Ness

90 photos that define Cleveland Heights

Cleveland Heights officially became a city in 1921. Cleveland Heights Patch is by compiling 90 photos to create an album of the city's past and present. We'll run the feature for 90 days, one photo at a time.

Today's photo features the family of Eliot Ness, who lives in pop culture as the leader of The Untouchables. Ness was a federal agent who bought down Al Capone during Prohibition. After Prohibition ended, Ness was eventually transferred to Cleveland where he headed a district office of the Alcohol Tax Unit for the U.S. Department of Treasury in 1934. The next year, he became safety director for Cleveland.

Ness cleaned up a corrupt police department and introduced a number of innovations, including car radios. He also created a separate traffic safety division and improved the fire department.
