Photo Gallery: Donut Day on Scarborough Road

For the past nine years, the Sperl family has hosted "Donut Day" at their home on Scarborough Road

About nine years ago, Thomas Sperl got nostalgic over a machine he saw at a neighbor's yard sale. The device was a doughnut machine. It revived memories of Homer Price, a children's book that included a story about a young man's adventures with an unstoppable doughnut maker.

Sperl's wife, Cynthia, put her foot down: no doughnut machine. He thought the matter was over until Father's Day. His family bought the machine to surprise him.

Every October since then, he's hosted "Donut Day" at his house on Scarborough Road. An estimated 400 people came out for this year's celebration on Oct. 15. The line snaked through the Sperl's yard and down the driveway for hot doughnuts, plain or slathered with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. Drinks included coffee or cider.
