IngenuityFest: Cheap Date

Art, music and science meet and mingle this weekend at Cleveland's free Festival of Creativity and Innovation.

Check back every Friday for Cheap Date: one weekend event or activity that won't break the bank.

Dance companies and bands, art installations and exhibitions, speakers and comedians. Normally Clevelanders have to go to several venues to experience such a wide variety of entertainment.

But not this weekend, and not at IngenuityFest.

Cleveland's free Festival of Creativity and Innovation runs Friday through Sunday and will be housed in two warehouses on the lakefront with a space of more than 120,000 square feet.

The schedule is massive, and features not only passive performances and art galleries but interactive exhibitions. For example, people can change the color of the flowers Anthony Castronovo's "Hybrid Collaboration."

"For example, if 13 people text #GREEN to the site then the flowers will change their color to green. If someone also texts #SWIRL to the site, the flowers will light up in a swirling pattern. Through this interaction, Castronovo believes that 'a bridge will be formed between the physical and virtual world, causing people to interact with each other in collaboration,'" according to the Ingenuity website.

Though many — understandably so — coin the seventh annual IngenuityFest as a mingling of art, technology and science, organizers prefer to describe it differently.

"Visitors to IngenuityFest see that technology becomes a natural extension of art, and artistic expression flows freely from the exploration of science, engineering, and math. We don’t simply bring two disciplines together; we highlight the creativity and innovation taking place at the edge of both worlds."
