In 1942, Family Circle magazine lauded the theater as being the "only municipally owned and operated outdoor theatre of its kind in the United States."

In 1938, the amphitheater was constructed with WPA labor and contributions from John D. Rockefeller and other area philanthropists. The Alma theater was finished in 1944. — Source: "History of Cain Park"
