Bites Nearby: Battiste & Dupree Cajun Grill
The flavor of New Orleans in a laid-back atmosphere
— If you believe in the “don’t worry, be happy” approach to life, try a visit to the Battiste & Dupree Cajun Grill near the Cleveland Heights / South Euclid border.
This small establishment (5 or so tables) is run by owner/chef/server “Junior” Battiste, a man who enjoys engaging with his customers tableside. There’s jazz or zydeco music filtering into the room, which is decorated with a curious collection of photos, jazz posters, Christmas lights and other bric-a-brac.
But with a potent N’awlins’ cocktail in hand, the feeling is smooth and unhurried. And although the Creole and Cajun food may not come out in a rush, it arrives with the undeniable stamp of genuine Louisiana goodness.

The jambalaya features crawfish, Cajun sausage, shrimp and a raft of authentic seasoning. The result is a complex flavor profile that also shows up in other dishes, such as steak and okra gumbo, chicken etouff’ee and even authentic New Orleans French toast.
If you’re into sandwiches, the giant shrimp po’boy might be to your liking, served on substantial slabs of French bread.
