Visions for Vacancies: Borders At Severance

What would you like to see in the space at Severance Town Center?

The old Borders in is still vacant.

According to an article published in The Plain Dealer Sept. 7, 2010, the store opened in February 2000 and shuttered Oct. 2, 2010.

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley said the company that owns Severance, Pine Tree Commercial Realty, LLC, is optimistic that something will fill the space soon, but for now we want your ideas.

If you could pick a store or restaurant, what would it be? Do you have other suggestions for the property?

Tell us your choice in the comments below. If we receive a lot, we'll collect them all and republish them with a poll.

I think they should put some sort of fun place familes can come, like a laser tag, bowling, bouncing place. And offer babysitting while parents attend a night out of movies. Just a thought, I know I would love for someone to watch my son while I go out to dinner or a movie.

Or how about a hotel like Great Wolf Lodge? might seem crazy, but it would generate a lot of out of town business, not to far from downtown.

Thanks, Lisa and Jan, for all of your ideas! Let's hear some more!

PineTree should try to attract a different kind of tenants to Severance - small local restaurants that would attract people at lunch hour as well as in the evening - like Johnny Mango, Mamocho; again, there have been suggestions of a bowling alley and Ikea in the past. Perhaps a decent mid-range retail store along the lines of Anthropology or a salon to bring people to Severance. Nothing cheapens a neighborhood like a big plaza full of discount retailers, chain stores and fast food restaurants. Also, how about fixing up that old mess that used to be called a movie theater?...

One thing for sure, it has to be something different, no more dept stores. I think if they build something for familes it would be a win win. I sure hope they don't build condo's.Money would only go to the owners and not employ many people. Plus the area needs to generate money throughout.

I can agree with you about the movie theater, they should have a muvico there.

How about a new KOSHER restaurant -- something to appeal to all the Jewish families in the area.
JanNiekamp June 16, 2012 at 09:14 PM
Peggy, what about the other families who are Not Jewish. Its about community not just one religion.
Emily Jones June 17, 2012 at 03:23 AM
JanNiekamp, I sure hope that you are not inferring that "Jews" are not part of our "community" in Cleveland Heights. Last I checked, Kosher restaurants are no different than a Chinese, Italian or Greek restaurant in that they cater to EVERYONE. Peggyvan makes a good point that a Kosher restaurant might appeal to the large Jewish population in the area that have dietary needs that a Kosher restaurant can provide. Maybe they can make it a Kosher Chinese restaurant!

Kosher Chinese restaurant might work.
