9/11 Anniversary: Sept. 11 Monument at Lake View Cemetery

The American Heroes Monument, constructed around a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, is located at the Mayfield Road entrance. Lake View is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

A single white rose was displayed on top of the American Heroes Monument at Monday, Sept. 10, a day before the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The monument, dedicated Sept. 11, 2004, honors the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and also those who "protect our freedoms and sacrifice their lives to preserve the spirit of America."

"While we remember the tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001, with the monument, it also honors the public safety forces, police, fire and EMS who put their lives on the line for all of us on a daily basis," said Mary Krohmer, director of community relations for the Lake View Cemetery Foundation.

The monument was constructed around a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, and it depicts the towers, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA.

"The granite towers embracing the steel represent the Twin Towers. The broken area on the Pentagon depicts the attack made on the heart of our national security and the state of Pennsylvania has a star marking the crash site of Flight No. 93," Lake View Cemetery wrote in an informational sheet about the monument.

Sept. 11 has been declared Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In a proclamation to the country, President Barack Obama has asked citizens to remember the “abiding spirit of compassion” that filled the nation after the attacks by volunteering in the upcoming days.

“Even the simplest act of kindness can be a way to honor those we have lost, and to help build stronger communities and a more resilient Nation. By joining together on this solemn anniversary, let us show that America's sense of common purpose need not be a fleeting moment, but a lasting virtue — not just on one day, but every day,” the resolution reads.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has also issued a resolution, asking all Ohioans to observe Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance and to fly all U.S. and Ohio flags on public grounds at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Sept. 11. Kasich’s resolution also asks all Ohioans to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on Tuesday.

There is no formal ceremony at Lake View today, but the grounds are open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., according to its website, though the gates usually stay open a bit longer. The monument is located at the Mayfield Road entrance.
