What is the value, in dollars, of each resident of South Euclid to CCPL Board?

QUESTION: What is the value, in dollars, of each resident of South Euclid (population 22,295) to the 7 members of the Cuyahoga County Public Library Board*?

ANSWER:  Less than 2 cents. To be more precise: $.017941.

WHY DO I SAY THAT? The Cuyahoga County Public Library Board has refused several times to pay $400 for a storm water analysis of the proposed site for a new South Euclid-Lyndhurst Library on Green Rd.  This analysis would be done by the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District (CSWCD)

The Library Board asked CSWCD to review the plans for libraries in Parma, Garfield Heights, Olmsted Falls and North Royalton.

Why won’t they ask CSWCD to review the site on Green Road? The proposed site of the new Library is 500 ft. from the Langerdale Step Pool Detention Basin, built in 2008 to manage storm water. As quoted on the City of South Euclid website:

The basin, which relegated the stream to a concrete channel, had overflowed twice, causing flooding to adjacent homes.  To this day, the basin fills up to the top of the dam on the north end during heavy rains.

Attached are pictures taken November 2012 on Green Rd along the site of the proposed new Library. A vehicle hydroplaned and had an accident.

  • Please call Board President Robert Varley and ask him why it is not worth $400 to PREVENT paying for problems later.
  • Please remind him the Board is spending $12.6 million to build a new Library when it would cost $5 million to renovate the current Library.
  • Why won’t the board spend $400 to protect all of us?
