Yikes! Browns Fall to 0-5, Lose to Giants 41-27

Alicia Keys says New York is where dreams are made of. If that's true, someone please wake me up because this dream is more like a nightmare!

2throws1play.com <- If this site existed, it would a .gif of Brandon Weeden throwing the ball off of a defenders helmet, catching it himself, and throwing it again on the same play for a ‘touchdown’. This crazy play was only a small part of the circus that was Sunday’s Browns/Giants game.

After jumping out to an early 14-0 lead early in the 1st quarter, I found myself looking around the room at my brother-in-laws wondering if anyone was going to say anything. Is this really happening? EVERYTHING was working early… EVERYTHING. The defense forced a fumble on the Giants opening drive, turned it into 7 points on the back of Trent Richardson who once again was in BEAST MODE. Weeden threw a seemingly perfect pass to Josh Gordon for 7 more. Soon after, the bottom dropped out.

Let’s break down some key moments in the game –

- On 3rd and 1ft, Shurmur calls for a passing play which gets picked off and nearly turned into a ‘Pick 6’. The Giants ended up punching it in for 7. The question on everyone’s mind is ‘why in the world did we not hand the ball to Richardson who was a man possessed, ripping the Giants defense for 5 and 6 yards at a time?' Just like a the age old question, ‘how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-roll-tootsie pop’... the world will never know.

- Josh Cribbs returns a kick and runs down the field like he’s running a loaf of bread home to his momma. Unfortunately, it was the Giants who wanted to make a sandwhich and swatted the loaf away, forcing a fumble that took whatever momentum the Browns had and squashed it. Cribbs did have a nice return later in the game but that play will get filed in the 'too little-too late' category.

- Buster Skrine, the man with the coolest name in the game, just got shredded by Eli Manning. He would have a serious case for the NFL on bullying. Manning was taking his lunch money, buying Skrine’s girlfriend lunch then posting pictures on Facebook of him kissing her after the game. To make things worse, he was tagging Buster Skrine in the pics just so the live alert would hit his phone. It wasn’t even funny, in fact… it was quite sad. To make things worse, every time he gave up a play, I had my brother-in-law in my ear saying, “I hope you had fun in Vegas Haden!” He's right, it's clear this defense misses Joe Haden!

- The defense overall was not good at all. I can’t remember the Browns getting any pressure on Manning. I don’t have it in me to dig through stats on pressures or sacks but if I can’t recall off of the top of my head that alone says something.

- Penalties = Poor coaching staff. Need I say more?

- 3rd and goal from the 5 yard line, Schurmur takes Richardson out of the game. A 5 yard penalty is called on the Browns pushing them back to the 10 yard line. 3rd and goal from the 10 and Shurmur puts Richardson back in the game.  I’m still trying to figure out why he’d be used in the latter equation but not the former? If I’m coaching the Browns, he’s in the game on 3rd down… especially if we’re inside the red zone.

Some good things…

- Jordon Norwood had a nice game. After a lack luster performance last week, he made a few really nice catches this week and looked more like the Jordon Norwood we saw in the preseason who was catching everything thrown his way.

- Greg Little was only targeted twice. It’s about time they stopped throwing to him.

- Josh Gordon is starting to show us why he was worth a 2nd round draft pick. I’m excited to see how he progresses the rest of the year.

- Trent Richardson is the real deal. If he isn’t running by people, he is running over people. He fights for every last inch and refuses to go down.

- Joe Thomas kept Pierre-Paul in check the entire game, Weeden had time to throw and looked comfortable dropping back to pass.

- Weeden continues to progress. Yes he threw 2 INT’s to match his 2 TD’s but I put the blame on Shurmur for his first INT. People will argue that 1 play doesn’t change the outcome of the game but for a young team with a rookie quarterback it certainly can. I thought for the most part he looked poised in the pocket, made good decision and continued finding Richardson in space when it made sense to check the play down.

What are your thoughts from the game?

If Jordan Norwood is the first bullet point on "some good things", you know we were in trouble. Joe Thomas finally had a good game but it wasn't all rosy. Dan Dierdorf said that he thought Thomas thought it was a pass play because of how badly he was bulrushed. And I'm pretty sure that he was the culprit on the near fumble Weeden had. Also conspicuously missed a block on a stretch play where they had him moving out to seal the edge. Well written recap but I think you overstated all your "some good things" which is even more depressing.

Bullrushed* and it was on a Richardson draw

Sorry Joe, I was digging for something, anything good. Lol you're right though, its hard to pick out individual highlights, everyone is to blame for this sloppy, half-assed 'program' that Shurmur is 'running'.
