Teens Say Condoms Ruin the Fun. HIV Says It Doesn't Care.

When you preach safe sex to the young ones, be sure to practice what you preach.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 1.1 million Americans are living with the HIV virus.  About one in five of those don’t know it.  All I know is, that’s a whole lot of sexually active people who could give me AIDS. Or you.

The best way to keep us all protected is if every infected person knows about their condition. Since that’s not happening, every sexual person needs to be as careful as possible.

If you think I’m only talking about grown-up, mature adults, think again.

Last month, the CDC announced that nearly half of U.S. high school students say they’ve had sex.  Those same kids were asked about their condom use, the answer was, ”Not so much.”

Approximately 60% of so-called “experienced” teens say they used condoms the last time they had sex, and that’s up from the 46% who were using condoms in 1991. Bad news: Teen condom use today is still lower than the high of 63% reported in 2003.

Education at the high school level is critical because 4 of every 10 new HIV infections occur in a person younger than 30. I say, if your age is in double digits, you need to be learning about safe sex. Period.

Of course, more sex with more people equals more risk. In 1991, almost 20% of high schoolers said they’d had 4 or more sexual partners; that number is down to 15% now. (Four partners?! Who ARE these kids?)

In a 1996 survey, 62% of adults reported using a condom during their last sexual act outside of an ongoing relationship.  But if we’re in A Relationship, the numbers plummet to just 19%. Wow. Sure hope nobody’s cheating or anything.

Single NotMoms, show the next gen how it’s done. (So to speak.)

Use a condom. Every time. I’m talking to you, too, my Boomer peeps.

As for women happily, and newly, ensconced in a relationship, consider getting tested with your partner.  Once the (happy) results are in hand, that’s the time to consider giving up the Love Glove for good.

To daughter , if you want to continue seeing this young man you need to go to Planned Parenthood, she said to me in her very very stupid teenage voice... OMG mom the birthcontrol pill will make me fat! ok at this time I took a deep breath and a shot of good what ever was around! and said... Daughter if you think the pill makes you fat, try being pregnant! Then in my deep wisdom and bourbon infiltrated mind said...no pill ,,,,,,,,,no boyfriend! Lets go to present day.she is 36 has 2 kids , military lady and the boyfriend, I doubt she remembers his name! all I got to say, is thank ya sweet jesus and planned parenthood!

I think Planned Parenthood would say, You're welcome.

Are you sure you were reading THIS blog? I am a woman without children "By Chance," which is no secret to close readers. My blog, however, represents ALL women without kids, whether they chose it or not.
And the preaching was to keep you safe from AIDS. That's it.

"Are you sure you were reading THIS blog?"
No, he didn't read it. That's because his reading comprehension is lacking something terrible.

I agree. I had even been tempted to start a blog just before this new and "improved"Read More layout. No longer interested in doing that - can't find anything on this patch.

That's odd. I was at the previous meeting, my first - on Global Warming, paid dues for the firstRead More time ever, wrote down my e-mail more than once, and still had no idea there was a meeting was last night.

Diane, for what it's worth, I believe FutureHeights has announced their intention to have a meetingRead More where the community can discuss ideas for Severance.

Along those lines, Diane, I thought an indoor greenhouse would be a good idea. Classes on how toRead More create gardens, grow food, store and preserve food would be an asset to the City.

Diane H. Dreizen & bachtobroadway42 - what interesting ideas! I'd love to see the whole messRead More raised and the area turned into a public park/recreation area with walking trails, bicycle paths, community gardens, etc. It seems the wind turbines could be in a place like that too. That's my dream, but we'll probably get some hideous redundant commercial development instead.

Just ignore them then. The important thing is what we're talking about HERE.

Please join the conversation. The proposed school bond would be a timely starting point!
