Cookies, Cupcakes, Coffee, Cocoa and Conversation
The benefits of informal gatherings with your child's friends and their parents
As I watched and waited for the impact of Hurricane Irene on the East Coast, I received a call from one of my sons who lives in Virginia Beach, VA with one of his childhood friends. I was told two of their friends from Cleveland were visiting them. I had a talk with the boys (now men). In my effort to comfort their fears, they reminded me of an idea that I used when they were school age boys.
This idea is a very old favorite. When my children were approaching school age, I would occasionally invite their friends and parents to our home to have cookies or cupcakes prepared by the children. Their parents provided assorted coffees and cocoa for the children. We allowed the children to do the setup their style. While we waited to be served we had many conversations about the many ways we as parents could teach our children and keep our children safe, respectable and accountable.
The children really liked the idea, and it really helped the parents stay on top of things. The children eventually gave the get together a new name “Five-0”. I think they finally realized that we were getting together as parents to be better prepared to give them parental guidance.

We talked about making good grades, good behavior, social issues, and the importance of getting a good education. I strongly encourage every parent to be involved in your child’s educational experience. Remember, charity begins “at home”.
Have a Great Day!
