Huron Road Hospital Closing

Huron road hospital, Hurricane Katrina, some similarities?

This  decision to close Huron Road Hospital has a familiar feeling for me personally.

This must be what the people of New Orleans felt during Hurricane Katrina.

They knew that there was help for them, and there was hope and a way out. However, they had to wait on the Federal Government and Public Officials to determine when it was time or whether it was worth the time for the people to be recused from such devastation.

I chose this comparison as a result of a visit with a small group of residents in East Cleveland, sipping tea and nibbling on finger sandwiches.

One June 11, with great anticipation we were waiting to hear from the Mayor of East Cleveland to give airtime on 91.1 WRUW Radio Station. We made numerous phone calls for others to listen to the broadcast. We listened intentently as the announcer repeatedly told us that the Mayor will chime in shortly. As we approached 2:00 PM we were told the dreaded news of dissapointment, that he didn't call in.

A broken promise or commitment can have  substantial consequences for some people, especially if you are dealing with fragile and sensitive people and in this case seniors having a hard time processing everyday life decisions.

One of the ladies left the room before leaving the gathering,  she said "It's over. People don't care about us and where is the Leadership? Where is the representation?"

Yes there has been a decline in many areas in East Cleveland, but as long as there are people still living there, East Cleveland is a neighborhood.

How and who determines demograhically where and when emergency treatment would be most effective?

How many times do you think we would really use Life Flight Transportation? This is by no means, an economical ride. I know this from experience, I've had to be transported a few times myself in life threatening situations.

With the loss of so many jobs and its affect on so many families, why are we taking accessibility to healthcare from them?

I know we are a divided nation, and a divided government, but we are not a divided community.

The location of this facility is at the core of many neighboring communities, changing the services we are accustomed to receiving is like putting a virus in a computer.
