John M. Farley, 80, Retired LTV Steel Vice President

He also was named a vice president of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Northern Ohio Chapter in 2006

John Michael Farley served as vice president of research and engineering and as vice president of international technology for LTV Steel before retiring in the 1990s.

The Cleveland Heights resident, who died Feb. 22 at age 80, began his career in the steel industry in 1957 as a development engineer at Jones and Laughlin Steel’s Cleveland Works.

In the 1960s, he transferred to J&L headquarters in Pittsburgh, where he held a variety of executive positions.

Farley returned to Cleveland in 1984 following the merger of J&L with Republic Steel to form LTV Steel.

He served as president of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers in 1994 and was named a vice president of the in 2006.

Farley also served as a Eucharistic minister for the Church of the Gesu in University Heights. He belonged to the Central Committee of the Cuyahoga County Republican National Committee and the Mayfield Country Club.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School.

Farley earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

He used his engineering education while serving in the Navy as an officer with the Civil Engineer Corps from 1954 until joining Jones & Laughlin in 1957.

His athletic pursuits included running, golfing and curling. He loved literature, music, old movies and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Farley is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy; children, Anne Sherwin, Joan Christie and John O.; and two grandchildren.

Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Brown-Forward Funeral Home, 17022 Chagrin Blvd., Shaker Heights.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Church of the Gesu, 2470 Miramar Blvd., University Heights.
