Obituary: Phyllis Evans, Long-time Cleveland Heights Councilwoman

Phyllis Evans, a long-time Cleveland Heights Councilwoman, died July 31

Phyllis Evans, a long-time Cleveland Heights City Councilwoman, died on July 31.

Evans was an elected member of the Cleveland Heights City Council and served in this capacity for 20 years and as Vice-Mayor for several years.

"Phyllis Evans was an integral part of making the City the vibrant community that it is today," said Mayor Ed Kelley in a statement. "She had a special  commitment to our residents and a love of people. I know I speak for Council and City staff to say that she was a joy to work with."

During her time on Council, Phyllis Evans supported expanded youth and recreation programs, diversity and integration initiatives, and infrastructure improvements. She was a champion of human and civil rights and was a founding member of the Heights Fund, a pro-integrative housing program.

Besides her public service, Evans worked for 37 years in the Microbiology Lab at University Hospitals of Cleveland. 

Viewing is Monday from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. at H.M. Martin Funeral Home, located at 3856 E. 131 Street. A funeral service for Evans is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at St. James A.M.E. Church, located at 8401 Cedar Avenue.
