Bird's Nest Only Casualty in pizzaBOGO Fire

Workers put a torch too close to the nest and the roof caught fire

The roof of in Cleveland Heights caught fire late this morning after a torch got a little too close to a bird's nest.

Workers were repairing the roof of the pizza shop nearby Cedar and South Taylor roads and using a torch. The flame got close to the bird's home, and the material ignited, said Mike Tysh, captain of the . 

A city employee was driving by and happened to spot the black smoke, and called the department between 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., according to dispatch.

Firefighters arrived quickly, and evacuated the building as employees weren't even aware the building was ablaze, Tysh said. Cedar Road was blocked to traffic from Goodnor Road to at least South Taylor, and several were on the scene. 

They extinguished the flames within minutes, no one was injured and Tysh estimates that the damage is about $5,000 at most.

By about 11:30 a.m., the music was on, employees were making pizza again and the manager was out on a delivery. 

And Tysh walked out with a few free pies, compliments of the manager.
