A portion of Mayfield Road is being dedicated today to Officer Thomas Patton, a Cleveland Heights police officer who died of cardiac arrest in March 2010 while chasing a suspect.
The family, which includes Officer Patton's father, State Sen. Thomas Patton, R-24, Strongsville, has requested a private ceremony, and asked that press not attend, said Rob Nichols, spokesman for Gov. John Kasich.
Kasich will be one of the speakers at the service, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Mayfield and South Taylor roads, said Mayor Ed Kelley.
The road will be renamed "Officer Thomas F. Patton II Memorial Highway" from Warrensville Center to Coventry roads on Mayfield.
Markers indicating the name change are up, but had not yet been unveiled as of this afternoon.
Officer Patton was chasing a suspect who was accused of harassing an employee at on Coventry Road when he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest, according to a Sun Press article from March 2010. He was 30.
