Council Quick Takes: Land Sale Will Bring City More Than $1.1 Million

The city has owned the land where Zagara's is since 2001 and will now sell it to DPL Properties

At the most recent Cleveland Heights City Council meeting Feb. 21, about the possibility of the into the former Millikin School building. Council members also talked about the proposed and announced when residents could share their input on the amendments.

Here's what else happened at the meeting in :

  • City Council agreed in July 2001 to lease the city-owned land that now houses at 1940 Lee Road to DPL Properties. DPL in turn agreed to build the grocery store and in lieu of taxes, it paid the city under a tax increment financing plan. DPL is finished paying off its bond debt, said Councilman Dennis Wilcox. City Council voted to sell the building for $1,150,000 to DPL Properties at its meeting Tuesday. The original terms indicated that DPL could purchase it Dec. 31, 2014, and pay the city $1,340,739.62, but those terms were changed.

"It’s a win-win for both of us. He gets the property earlier ... and we get our money basically 34 months earlier. We can obviously use it. The money in all likelihood will be used for economic development purposes only," said Mayor Ed Kelley.

  • Council approved legislation to hire Behnke Associates Inc. for engineering and construction management of a new spray park and two electronic signs in . The wading pool will be taken out, and a spray park, where kids will be able to play in streams of water, will be built. The fees will not exceed $24,900 for the project.
  • Council declared the property at 1779 Caldwell Avenue a nuisance.
  • Council agreed to give $8,500 from the Community Development Block Grant to help pay for 10 sales and /or rental unit fair housing audits.
