Joey's Italian Restaurant to Open in Cleveland Heights

City Council approves $50,000 Economic Development Loan for second location of Solon restaurant

The space formerly occupied by Jimmy O'Neill's Tavern on Lee Road will be filled with pasta and pizza by spring, Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley said at Monday's council meeting.

Joey's Italian Restaurant, located in Solon, secured a $50,000 loan from the city's Economic Development Loan Fund Program for kitchen supplies when council approved the resolution Monday.

The restaurant opened in Chagrin Falls in 1981 but was destroyed in a fire in November 2011.

It reopened in Solon nine months later.

Kelley said that he has been pursuing the owners of Joey's since the fire destroyed the Chagrin Falls location. Now, he said that Joey's will open at the 4,000-square-foot space 2195 Lee Road, which has been vacant for 18 months.

The city approved the five-year loan with four percent interest with a 6-0 vote. Cheryl Stephens was absent from the meeting.

There's our city council, acting as both promoter *and* banker, once again. Two roles that have an inherent fiduciary conflict. With our $. Made worse by their systemic lack of underwriting procedures and the misunderstanding of the value of "collateral".
