Preservation Month Events Begin May 12

City Council declared May Preservation Month at its regular City Council meeting April 16.

To recognize the importance of historic preservation and sustainability, the city, Cleveland Heights Landmark Commission, Cleveland Heights Historical Society, Heights Libraries, FutureHeights, Heights Bicycle Coalition and the Home Repair Resource Center are joining forces and sponsoring seven free events during May, June and July.

Here is more information about each:

• May 12, 10 a.m. — The Heights Bicycle Coalition and the Cleveland Heights Historical Society will sponsor a free lecture and bike tour of the neighborhoods listed on the National Register of Historic Places at .
• May 14, 7 p.m. — Mark Bassett, Scholar in Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Art, will discuss the WPA Sculptures that are now displayed in the library. will host the lecture, “The Art of Reading: Cleveland’s WPA-Era Ceramics.”
• May 19, 10 a.m. — Cleveland Heights is well represented in “Cleveland Historical,” an interactive history app highlighting Cleveland’s people and places developed by Cleveland State University’s Center for Public History and Digital Humanities. The app will be used during “An App-Enhanced Walking Tour of the Coventry Neighborhood,” but you don’t need to have a smart phone to participate. Meet at the Coventry P.E.A.C.E. Park arch near .
• May 24, 7 p.m. — Kara Hamley O'Donnell, historic preservation planner for Cleveland Heights, will teach residents how to research the history of their homes during the “Cleveland Heights House History Workshop” at the Lee Road Library.
• June 7, 7 p.m. — Mary Ogle from the Cleveland Restoration Society will provide an overview of typical maintenance issues in older homes and suggest ways to prevent them from becoming big problems. Ogle will also provide tips on how to be more energy efficient.
• June 21, 7 p.m. — Michael Fleenor from the Cleveland Restoration Society will discuss how American home interiors have evolved from 1850 to 1950 at the Lee Road Library.
• July 12, 7 p.m. — The will sponsor a lecture on energy-efficient roofs and insulation. Architect Chuck Miller will lead “Your Roof: Bottom/Up, Top/Down Sustainability” at the Lee Road Library.
