Salary Set For New City Manager; Starts Aug. 1

Tanisha Briley is the new Cleveland Heights city manager.

Cleveland Heights City Council approved an employment contract with its new city manager Monday.

Tanisha R. Briley starts Aug. 1, and will earn $140,000 per year.

Briley was hired as city manager in June. Since then, city officials have been working out a contract. That contract will be approved tonight.

Susanna Niermann O'Neil has been serving as acting city manager since former manager Bob Downey resigned last April. Niermann O'Neil will continue service as Vice City Manager and community services director.

On Monday, council members said they were eager for Briley to get started and were looking forward to working with her.

They also took time to praise Niermann O'Neil, who they thanked for her service. They gave her a standing ovation.

An emotional Niermann O'Niel said she really enjoyed her time as acting city manager.

"I feel we really came together in the great spirit of energy and cooperation to make things go forward," she said.

Briley, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University and a Masters of Public Administration from Cleveland State University, has worked for the City of Davenport, Iowa since 2006.

Beginning as a Management Analyst in Davenport, she most recently served from 2010 to the present as an Assistant City Administrator. Some of her responsibilities in that position included budget development, marketing initiatives and sustainability programs. She has also taken the lead on citizen involvement and youth programming.

Briley is a member of the International City/County Manager Association (ICMA) and has chaired several national committees.

Interviews were held with three applicants: Tom Carroll, City Manager of Loveland, Ohio; Richard White, Assistant Manager for Administrative and Community Services of Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, Athens, Georgia; and Briley.
