South Taylor Road Construction Delayed Again

The engineer from the Ohio Department of Transportation who was supposed to work on the project retired; no new date confirmed yet

Construction on South Taylor Road has been delayed again.

The $5 million project was  and moved  because city officials weren't sure if state money to fix the road would be included in Gov. John Kasich's new budget, said City Manager Robert Downey.

The project has been delayed again because an engineer from the Ohio Department of Transportation, which is running the project, retired, according to city officials.

Mayor Ed Kelley has called the road the worst in Cuyahoga County, and is anxious for the project to get under way.

"I wish it had already started, to be honest with you. We're losing good quality road construction time," Kelley said. "August is flying by — I had hoped they'd start by August."

Downey said he's still waiting to hear back from ODOT. Once he has more information, the city will schedule a meeting to describe the scope of work to residents and take questions before construction begins.

Cleveland Heights City Council read a resolution that described the financing and details of the project, which is also paid for with federal and county money, at its meeting June 20.

The project still went out for bidding as planned, Kelley said, and the lowest bidder is Perk Company

Kelley said though some estimate that the work will take two years, he guesses it will be closer to three.

But it's worth the wait.

"I want it done right the first time," Kelley said.

The project will start at Euclid Heights Boulevard and run north on Taylor to the East Cleveland border, which is roughly a mile and a half.
