A Third of CH-UH Schools Will Have New Leaders This Fall

The CH-UH School Board approved the appointment of three principals and the resignation of two at its meeting July 17. Here's a look at other changes for the 2012-2013 school year.

A third of the schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District will have new principals this fall.

Professional Development School, Elementary School, Elementary School and Cleveland School will have new leaders. Out of 16 principal positions in 12 schools, five changed, one was removed and one was added.

Most recently, the CH-UH School Board approved the appointments of three principals and the resignation of two at its meeting Tuesday night (July 17):

  • Michele Evans will lead Gearity Professional Development School and earn $105,788.  She starts Aug. 8 and signed a two-year contract. Former Gearity principal in June after at Hilltop Elementary School in the Beachwood City Schools.
  • Andrett Calloway was also officially hired July 17 to lead Fairfax Elementary School. She also signed a two-year contract and will earn $100,183.
  • Michael Wasser, who had served as the Fairfax principal since the 2010-2011 school year and earned $103,096 each year, was in the district's educational services department in July. About two weeks later, he resigned. He will be the director of business services for Warren City Schools, said Angee Shaker, communications director for the district.
  • Crystal Maclin will run Legacy school, one of four small schools in Heights High. She begins Aug. 8 and signed a two-year contract with a yearly salary of $103,096. She will replace James Reed, who is moving to Renaissance, the small school he started, Shaker said.
  • Nicholas Petty, former Renaissance principal, resigned and will be principal of Ginn Academy in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, she said. 

The board also approved hiring administrative principal in Heights High at its meeting July 3. The district eliminated the “” program, which also had its own principal, implemented in the 2011-2012 school year.

"The freshman experience program will exist inside each of the small schools next year but it won’t be referred to as the 'freshman experience' any longer. Each small school model now has their own special way of dealing with freshman," Shaker said.

Earlier this year, announced he was leaving to become principal of a private school at his church, where his wife is senior pastor. And former Legacy principal Marc Engoglia, who was appointed as the coordinator of educational services, resigned.

Hannah Reid replaced Engoglia, but Wasser’s role in the educational services department will not be filled at this time, said Nylajean McDaniel, human resources director for the district.
