CHUH School Board to Hear Plans for High School Next Year at Work Session

Principal and teacher reassignments at Cleveland Heights High School on the agenda tonight

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board will hear from high school officials tonight about principal and teacher reassignments and other changes at the small schools next year. 

The regularly scheduled work session will be held at  Auditorium at 7 p.m. 

split into five small schools in 2004 and 2005 as part of the Ohio High School Transformation Initiative, and the hope was that student achievement, engagement and graduation rates would improve.

But school officials said . Students aren't taking all classes within their small schools, achievement has tapered off and about a quarter of freshmen have to repeat the ninth grade. The district decided to eliminate one small school starting next year and create a program specifically designed for freshmen. 

, and how the schools will be reconfigured at Heights High will be discussed tonight, said Angee Shaker, director of communications and engagement for the district. The 344 students in P.R.I.D.E. chose their new school at the end of the month. The school has 25 teachers.

"There will be some principal reassignments at the high school, and teacher shifting between the small schools," Shaker said by e-mail. 

The board will also discuss curriculum themes that will span all grades, and hear specifics about each small school. 

"Each small school will be explained, and how there will be clear pathways to each small school starting at the elementary level," Shaker said. 

Like all special work sessions, which are held once a month, the meeting is open to the public.
