Reminder: University Heights Town Hall Meeting To Discuss Gearity Set For Tonight

In all three CH-UH facilities master plan ideas, the only elementary school in University Heights, Gearity Professional Development School, would close. Mayor Susan Infeld is inviting residents to share their feedback.

University Heights Mayor Susan Infeld , set for 7 tonight at University Heights City Hall, to discuss the possibility that the only elementary school in the city would close.

Each of the facilities master plan design ideas proposed by architects working to renovate and rebuild schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District call for closing , which also houses a district preschool program.

"The purpose of the meeting is to inform residents of the district’s facilities plan to close Gearity elementary school and to hear feedback from residents on this proposal," Infeld said.

Superintendent Doug Heuer explained the district's reasons for potentially closing the school, and emphasized that the district is still seeking input from families and the facilities master plan is not finalized. (For more information about the third idea, click here.)

He said the number of students from University Heights who attend CH-UH Schools is low — out of the about 5,760 students in the district, 797 are from University Heights, 170 whom attend Gearity. Gearity's enrollment is about 320 students.

Cleveland Heights resident Conor T. McLennan said he sent a letter to Heuer and to members of the CH-UH School Board about the proposal to close Gearity and shared it with Cleveland Heights Patch:

I believe it is unacceptable that all three design ideas currently being proposed by the CH-UH City School District's facilities master plan call for the closing of Gearity Professional Development School, the last remaining public elementary school in University Heights.

I disagree with the decision to close a school that is ranked "Continuous Improvement" in order to send children to a school that is in "Academic Watch." I believe we should retain our best performing schools.

To remain a vibrant community, our children must have a quality local neighborhood school.
