Video: CHUH Superintendent Discusses Reading Goal for Primary Students

Students should be reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade, Douglas Heuer said

Superintendent Douglas Heuer spoke about his ambitious plan for the city's primary school students: have them before entering fourth grade.

Heuer explained the plan at a FutureNow meeting at on Tuesday. FutureNow is the young professionals committee of , a civic engagement organization in Cleveland Heights and University Heights, and Heuer was featured in its speaker series. 

Heuer said that 60 percent of kindergarteners aren't ready to learn when they enter school. The district plans to sort the students into performance groups with .

If the plan is successful, 98 percent of students should meet the target by the end of third grade, Heuer said.
