Week in Sports: Cleveland Heights' 4x200 Relay Team Takes Second at State

The Cleveland Heights’ 4x200-meter relay team took second with a season-best time of 1 minute and 27.76 seconds at the OHSAA Division I Track and Field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Marcus McShepard, senior Damon Legget, senior Ryan Bounds and sophomore Shelton Gibson were the members of the team that narrowly lost to a Thomas Worthington team that had a time of 1:27.42. Gibson’s anchor leg timed out at 20.4.

The same quartet took fourth in the 4x100 relay with at time of 42.26.

Individually, Gibson took fifth in the 100 (10.99) and eighth in the 200 (22.40).

“It wasn’t his race (100 dash), but being fifth place in Division I in Ohio means a lot,” Cleveland Heights track and field coach Nick Continenza said. “He needs to learn that just because he didn’t win doesn’t mean it’s not noteworthy.”

In the overall rankings, Cleveland Heights finished tied for seventh out of 78 teams that scored during the meet with 18 points. In terms of pure sprinting performances, the Tigers were third overall. And Continenza had the highest mark for first-year coaches at the meet.

“There’s not a lot to complain about. We came away with four all-state athletes,” Continenza said. “It was a good year.”

Also, the state quartet, along with junior Bryce Jones, junior Dionte Saffo and senior Emmanuel DeBramaletta, will compete in the 2011 New Balance Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC, from June 16 to 18.
