Councilwoman Mary Dunbar To Compete In National Senior Games
Cleveland Heights City Councilwoman is participating in the National Senior Games, which begin Friday in Cleveland.
Cleveland Heights Councilwoman Mary Dunbar is not just a legislator.
She's also an athlete.
Dunbar will participate in two swimming and two biking events in the National Senior Games, which begin in Cleveland Friday and run through Aug. 1.
She participating in the Ohio Senior Games last year and qualified for the national competition.
Dunbar said its her first time competing in the Games and setting a good example for Cleveland Heights residents about the importance of exercise.
In the pool, Dunbar is competing in the 200 meter and 500 meter freestyle. In cycling she will participate in the 10 kilometer time trial and 20 kilometer.
"I'm just planning on enjoying this experience," she said. "Many of us are living longer now. Those extra years are going to be a lot more enjoyable if we are healthy in body and mind."
At a meeting earlier this week, her fellow council members wished her well.
"Good luck and bring back the gold," said Mayor Ed Kelley. "We're counting on you."
Dunbar laughed. "I won't be last, but I'm not going to be first either."
