This Week in Sports: Cleveland Heights Boys' Basketball Falls to Harding

Raiders' big fourth quarter gets best of Tigers, girls' basketball defeats John Hay by 50 points and wrestling team prepares for sectionals

Aaron Ashley scored 17 points to lead the Cleveland Heights boys’ basketball team, but it wasn’t enough to overcome host Warren G. Harding in a 66-61 Lake Erie League loss on Friday.

Tre Brown was the game-high scorer with 18 points for the Raiders (12-4, 4-3 LEL). Craig McFerrin tacked on 14 points, and Shaheed Davis had 12.

“We made some mistakes down the stretch. We made some mistakes that cost us,” Cleveland Heights coach Barry Egan said. “You can’t make those kinds of mistakes against Harding.”

The Tigers led after each quarter and went into the fourth up, 47-44, but the Raiders bulged to a 22-point quarter against the Tigers’ 16 points to give them a tight victory.

Girls basketball

Chelsea Hicks and Daija Lee each scored 12 points to lead the Cleveland Heights girls’ basketball team to a 61-11 drubbing of John Hay in a non-league home game Wednesday.

Jasmine Harper and Supriya Frierson each had 10 points for the Tigers.

Cleveland Heights ended the first quarter on top, 17-2, and never looked back. John Hay scored no more than seven points in any quarter with that coming in the second as the Tigers finished the half up, 30-9.

The Tigers allowed only two points for the rest of the game.

The Hornets high scorers only managed four points each for John Hay (5-10).

Heights wrestling

The Cleveland Heights wrestling team lost both of its matches against Warrensville Heights and Maple Heights in a tri-match on Thursday night, but coach Willie Newton has his sights set on playoff action Friday.

“We’re looking at sectionals with Marcel Dear (145) and Javon Jackson (140) going for us,” Newton said. “They’re the two guys. . He’ll wrestle someone he can beat first and then have a bye. Then he’ll have just one match for the finals.”

In Thursday’s tri-match, Maple Heights had nearly 40 wrestlers, while Warrensville Heights had only five to match up with the Tigers. Newton said his team will be familiar with its opponents at sectionals having seen them on Thursday night.

“It’ll be a chance for them to see some of those guys again. We’ll be seeing Bedford, Maple and Shaker,” Newton said.

Sectional wrestling will be held at North Royalton.
