Infeld: Closing Gearity Will Kill University Heights

The proposal to close Gearity Professional Development School was a primary topic during a Monday meeting that included city and school officials from Cleveland Heights, University Heights and South Euclid.

University Heights Mayor Susan Infeld told the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board that if they decide to close Gearity Professional Development School, it will “kill our city.” “Frankly, it’s odd in an urban area to not have a public elementary school,” Infeld said at a meeting Monday that included about 20 officials from Cleveland Heights, University Heights and South Euclid city councils and the CH-UH School Board. “In an area that is urban with sidewalks, it is normal and kind to have an elementary school choice for your children.” The meeting was called to discuss the district’s third facilities master plan proposal, and the two most hotly debated topics — closing the only elementary school in University Heights, and …

CH-UH Will Discuss Long-Term Lease Of Millikin With Mosdos

Karen Jones, CH-UH School Board president, said this is the first option that will be made available to Mosdos Ohr Hatorah.

CH-UH School Board president Karen Jones announced at Tuesday night's school board work session that the district will discuss a long-term lease of Millikin with Mosdos Ohr Hatorah. The board met in executive session at 6 p.m. before the regularly scheduled work session at 7 p.m. at Wiley Middle School. Jones had said at a meeting Monday night that the board would consider putting the former Millikin School, which has been vacant since 2006, up for public auction. Instead, the board decided to "initiate entering into negotiations of a long-term lease," Jones said. "This is the first option that will be made available," Jones said. "(A public auction) is not off the table." Alan Rapoport, a former Cleveland Heights mayor who represents …

Just sell it. Why is there so much confusion on the part of the CH-UH Board? They can't get this done yet, they want more of our hard earned tax dollars to do what with...restructure the buildings??? Here is money in hand and they can't make a decision. One day it is a call center, the next day they want to auction it, now a lease. Please, please just sell it.   more ›

School Board To Discuss Putting Millikin Up For Public Auction in Executive Session Tonight

Board members will also meet at 7 p.m. for the regularly scheduled work session.

Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board president Karen Jones announced Monday night that board members will meet in an executive session tonight to discuss putting the former Millikin School up for public auction. "Our hope is to make a decision ... We do want to resolve the Millikin situation," Jones said. "We would like to get this off of our plate." Mosdos Ohr Hatorah parents and others in the Orthodox Jewish community sparked the Millikin debate when they told the CH-UH School Board at its Feb. 7 meeting that they wanted the property to remain a school, arguing it would significantly improve the neighborhood, increase property values and attract new residents. Supporters of Mosdos at Millikin continued to speak at meetings, …

I simply stated facts. Remember how Jason Stein slammed his fist after being instructed to yield the floor while continuing to speak four minutes past the limit all other citizen speakers are allotted? i think he exclaimed either "BRAVEHEART!!" or "THIS IS AMERICA!!" Maybe it was both. That makes him an avowed advocate for Mosdos. And he was included in the meeting as a member of the CH council. …   more ›

Kelley: Call Center Will Not Move Into Millikin

Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley confirmed the developer will have space near Monticello and Mayfield, and School Board president Karen Jones said the CH-UH Board will consider putting Millikin up for public auction in its executive session tonight.

The Millikin controversy has come full circle. The recent debate over the former school was sparked by word that a call center was interested in the building, constructed in the mid-50's, at 1700 Crest Road. Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley confirmed that was no longer on the table at a meeting Monday night that included Cleveland Heights and University Heights city councils and the CH-UH School Board at the Cleveland Heights Community Center. About 400 people came to listen to the work session, the majority being Orthodox Jewish families from Mosdos Ohr Hatorah, which wants to buy Millikin. Kelley said the developer previously interested in opening a call center in the school building, owned by the CH-UH City School District, has a …

City and school officials will discuss the proposed facilities master plan for the CH-UH district, and two major concerns from each city — Millikin and Gearity. Cleveland Heights City Council has asked the CH-UH School Board to meet to hear more about the future of the former Millikin School several times since February. The district released the updated appraisal last week, which said the market value of the property was about $770,000. University Heights Mayor Susan Infeld has openly shared her concern about the proposal to close Gearity Professional …
