Cleveland Heights City Council declared May Bike Month with events tonight and this Friday
Mary Dunbar, Cleveland Heights councilwoman and president of the Heights Bicycle Coalition, introduced legislation declaring May Bike Month and this Friday as Bike to Work Day in Cleveland Heights. "Bicycling is a viable, environmentally sound mode of transportation and an excellent form of fitness and recreation," said Dunbar at the May 6 meeting. "Candidly, people in this country need to be more physically active for health and environmental reasons." The Coalition will provide free Phoenix coffee and snacks to bicyclists during the morning commute near Edgehill and Overlook roads on May 17. Cleveland Heights High School Athletic Department honored 100 student athletes on April 29. Athletic Director Kristin Hughes invited the athletes to a ceremony where their accomplishments were recognized, according to the district's spokesperson Angee Shaker. “We are so proud that all of you excel both on and off the playing field,” she said in a prepared statement after the event. “This group includes all grade levels, every sport and both genders. The one common denominator is your commitment to excellence.” The students' GPAs ranged from 3.66 to 4.5962. The top two athletes were Andrew Bennett, who plays soccer and baseball, with that 4.5962 GPA and Natasha Madorsky, who plays tennis, and has a 4.4752 GPA.

Cleveland Heights Planning Commission is considering changes to zoning that would allow sponsors to advertise on scoreboards.
Sponsors may soon be able to put their mark on Cleveland Heights athletic fields. Planning commission will further review two ordinances Wednesday evening to change zoning that would permit sponsorhip scoreboard signs and to all them at events held at athletic fields, according to the city's website. It was originally introduced to planning commission on April 15 for review and comment and will be discussed further at Wednesday's meeting at 7 p.m. in council chambers. City council will hold a public hearing on the proposed revisions on Tuesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in council chambers. Is allowing sponsor signs in an athletic stadium a good idea? The University of Cincinnati was selected 63rd overall
Cleveland Heights native was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs as the first pick in the third round and the 63rd pick overall of the NFL draft. Kelce played was a 3-year letterwinner as a quarterback at Cleveland Heights High School and even lined up some as QB in the Wildcat formation as a freshman at University of Cincinnati. However, he found his calling after he transitioned to being a tight end. He set a school record for receiving yards for a tight end last year, according to the University of Cincinnati web site. He was selected to the All-Big East first team after catching 45 passes for 722 yards and eight touchdowns. NFL.com lists Kelce at 6'5'' and 255 pounds. Richard Lightbody, 65, would have crossed the finish line moments after bombs went off at Monday's race; makes it home safe with the help of two warm-hearted Boston-area residents
“If I could have done more, I would have. I’m not a doctor or a nurse or anything, but I can get a couple of people back to their people,” said Bob McKenna. He’s one of two men that Cleveland Heights runner Richard Lightbody called warm-hearted and generous after they helped him find his way back home after Monday’s explosions at the Boston Marathon. Lightbody, a 65-year-old psychoanalyst and longtime Cleveland Heights resident, was only a few minutes from the finish line at the race when two bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring nearly 200 more. “I heard two big explosions, which didn’t sound natural to me,” said Lightbody. The run will raise funds for University Hospitals Iris S. & Bert Wolstein’s Kids Kicking Cancer Foundation
The first ever Dick Mann Memorial Run/Walk not only pays tribute to a local legend, it will also raise money for cancer treatment and research. The Cleveland Heights High School athletic department is hosting the run April 27 at the high school. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. There is still time to sign up for the 2-mile run and walk. (A registration form has been attached to this story as a PDF.) Pre-registration costs $10. It costs $15 to register the day of the race. The run is a fundraiser for University Hospitals Iris S. & Bert Wolstein’s Kids Kicking Cancer Foundation.
