Week in Sports: Cleveland Heights 4x100 Relay Team Wins Regional

Marcus McShepard, Damon Legget, Ryan Bounds and Shelton Gibson run to title

The Cleveland Heights 4x100-meter relay team won with a time of 42.63 seconds at the OHSAA Division I Regional I Track and Field meet held at Austintown Fitch High School on Friday evening. Marcus McShepard, Damon Legget, Ryan Bounds and Shelton Gibson ran on the team that qualified for the OHSAA Division I Track and Field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. The top four in each event qualified for state competition. The four also combined to finish fourth (1:28.98) in the 4x200 relay. Run-offs and leg injuries to Diontre Delk prompted the change in the 4x200 relay team from the regional team of McShepard, Legget, Dionte Saffo and Delk. Cleveland Heights track and field coach Nick Continenza believes Delk could have …

Week in Sports: Cleveland Heights Boys' Track and Field Takes Second in LEL Championships

Meet finally completed after multiple weather delays

After rescheduling and site changes, the Lake Erie League finally completed its track and field championships on Saturday morning. The meet began Tuesday, was postponed Thursday due to inclement weather at Bedford and finished Saturday morning at Cleveland Heights High School before a downpour drenched the area. Coaches kept hand times and exact team and individual scores weren’t immediately available as official timekeepers were unable to attend the meet, said Cleveland Heights head coach Nick Continenza. Continenza said the Cleveland Heights boys’ team finished second to Mentor. Sophomore sprinter Shelton Gibson won the 100-meter dash in 10.7 seconds and the 200 in 21.5. Gibson anchored the 4x100 team that featured Marcus McShepard, …

Cleveland Heights Baseball Falls to Shaker Heights 8-2 in First Round of Sectional Tournament

Raider ace Spencer Byers strikes out 13 in complete game

The Cleveland Heights High baseball team's first-round sectional game against Shaker Heights couldn’t have started any better. After a one-two-three top of the first, the Tigers had the bases loaded with no outs thanks to three consecutive walks from Raider ace Spencer Byers. Shaker escaped allowing just two runs and retaliated quickly: scoring eight runs in the next three innings for an 8-2 victory. “I knew if we didn’t get on (Byers) early we were going to have trouble,” Cleveland Heights head coach Mike Dillon said. “He’s probably the hardest thrower we saw (all) year.” The Tigers scored their first run off of a passed ball that advanced Sam Collins from second to third, but Trey Hopkins failed to advance to second. The very next play, …

Rain Plagues Cleveland Heights Sports Calendar

Tigers coping as best they can under wet conditions

Rain rain go away, come again another day. For Cleveland Heights sports teams this spring season, it has been pouring most days, turning this simple nursery rhyme into a mournful blues tune. This week’s weather had potential, especially after a sunny Saturday that featured no cancellations of any sort. Spirits were high with five-day forecasts predicting a little sun and promises of competition. But Monday and Tuesday came and so did the rain, dampening the mood and knocking out much of the high school sports calendar, kicking off another period of waiting and watching. Most of the Cleveland Heights coaches said this is the worst spring they’ve seen for sports. “It’s a shame that the weather’s been like this, but we’re making the best of …

Bryce Jones is the Man of the Meet

Jones wins 110, 300 hurdles at Ned Weingart Relays at Cleveland Heights High School

Cleveland Heights’ Bryce Jones won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles along with a combined field event at the Ned Weingart Relays held at Cleveland Heights High School on Saturday. “Bryce Jones ended up winning the MVP of the meet,” Heights track coach Nick Continenza said. “He won the 110 hurdles first, which was a PR (personal record) for him. It was into a headwind, too. All of our races were in a headwind. That was pretty awesome that he was able to achieve that.” Jones won the 110 in 14.87 seconds and the 300 in 41.23, also a personal best. Jones combined with Camerin Cross to win the high jump relay (12-02) and with Rashawn Dickerson for third in the long jump relay (37-11.50). Other Cleveland Heights winners included James Moore, who …

Cleveland Heights Girls' Lacrosse Reaches No. 1

Tigers finish week unblemished, look forward to upcoming challenges

The Cleveland Heights girls' lacrosse team had a perfect week and earned the state’s top ranking after two dominant wins at the Hannigan-Galipault Lacrosse Tournament at Thomas Worthington High School near Columbus on Saturday. The Tigers pounded Lake Forest of Illinois, 11-4, and Mason of Cincinnati, 8-4, to top the new computer rankings of laxpower.com released late Saturday. Meg Lentz had seven of the eight goals for Cleveland Heights (7-1) against Mason. “We played two excellent games against very good competition. We started warming up in hail and rain and then played the games in pretty difficult conditions and played well,” Tigers coach Terry Saylor said. Earlier in the week, senior attacker Tali Lugasy had five goals and an assist …

Bedford Stuns Cleveland Heights Baseball 3-0

Bearcats get revenge after losing 15-0 last week

A couple of Cleveland Heights miscues combined with a complete game shutout from Bedford’s Davonte Anderson led to a 3-0 Tiger defeat Wednesday afternoon. This came just a week after Cleveland Heights routed the Bearcats 15-0. “This was a perfect scenario for an upset,” said Mike Dillon, head baseball coach for Cleveland Heights. The Bearcats struck early with two first-inning runs, both as a result of passed balls. Johnny Mohnasky singled then moved to second on a passed ball. Chris Colston brought him in with an RBI double and then scored from third on a passed ball two batters later. “Getting runs early got our confidence up for the rest of the game,” Bedford Head Coach Pete Priola said. “That helped us a great deal.” The Tigers had …

Cleveland Heights Baseball Team Splits Two

Late mistakes ruin chance at sweep

A little late misfortune kept the Cleveland Heights baseball team from sweeping a doubleheader at New Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. Up two runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, an error and a walk against pitcher Joe Eyerman started a big rally for New Philadelphia as it scored three runs to beat the Tigers, 5-4, in the nightcap. Trey Hopkins went 2-for-3 with a home run and a stolen base to lead the Tigers to victory in the opener, 5-4. The Tigers are 4-3 to open the season, and coach Mike Dillon feels the team is coming around despite some minor bumps and bruises with on-field mistakes. “We’ve had a few too many mental errors, which kind of hurt us in the losses, but I’m pleased with where we’re at right now. The …

Fans, Friends, Dignitaries Say Goodbye to Indians Great

Memorial service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church honors Bob Feller's life

Although 10-year-old Matt Arehart is too young to have seen Indians Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller on the mound, his grandmother and great aunt certainly did. Some tweens wouldn't be interested in attending remembrances of long-ago athletic legends they never witnessed in person with dewy-eyed elders needling them with all the plum details of the great times they missed. But his grandmother Carolyn Cassidy and her sister Martha Mooney didn’t have a problem convincing Matt, along with his 14-year-old twin brothers, Andrew and Jack, to attend a memorial service in tribute to the Cleveland sports legend this morning. Dignitaries from Ohio Gov. John Kasich to Indians owner Larry Dolan paid tribute to Feller’s life as a Major League Baseball …
