Editor's Note: This letter was sent to Michelle Simakis, former editor of Cleveland Heights Patch, last week following Nighttown's donation of $1,650 raised during Patch and Nighttown's debate watch parties this fall. The statue will be installed in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library's main branch on Lee Road, "Harvey's first love and second home."
Harvey Pekar's widow Joyce Brabner called the Lee Road Library Pekar's "first love and second home." So it's fitting that a statue in his honor will be installed at the main branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library next month. A dedication ceremony for the statue is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Lee Road Library. The acclaimed American Splendor comic book creator and Cleveland Heights resident died in 2010. After he passed, Brabner launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $38,000 for the statue, created by sculptor Justin Coulter. The library will also install a plaque proclaiming it a "Literary Landmark," designated by the Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundation, according to a …

Labor Day is the final day of the Cumberland Pool season, but most other city buildings and offices are closed.
Summer is winding down. Students went back to school Aug. 30, and we are now approaching Labor Day Weekend. Most government and school buildings are closed, but there's one place Cleveland Heights residents can go to celebrate summer's end — Cumberland Pool. Cumberland Pool is open 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, and Labor Day is the final day of the season. Robert Fischer's term began in May.
The Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board appointed Cleveland Heights resident Robert Fischer to the Heights Libraries board at its May 1 meeting. Fischer replaces Cardala Carter, who resigned in May to take a job as Nestle's digital marketing project manager in New York. She served three-and-a-half years of a seven year term. Fischer’s term will end in 2015. Fischer, who has lived in Cleveland Heights for 10 years, is a research associate professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University and co-director of the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development at the school. “I want to ensure that the library maintains its reputation for high quality service and extensive holdings,” …
